Does Cabral's view on culture and national liberation align with Sukarno's ideas on Third World culture/liberation? Needless to say, you don't have to run through the entire list of agreements/disagreements.
Cabral’s views on culture and liberation do not align with Sukarno’s ideas on third world culture. Cabral considers culture an important part of the liberation struggle. He emphasizes on multiple occasions that culture plays a key role in the development of the liberation movement . On the other hand, Sukarno does not consider culture that important when it comes to opposing colonialism. Indonesia itself is a culturally diverse country. That can be one reason why Sukarno was not interested in using culture as a tool against colonialism. He, instead, focused on the common desires of different groups such as freedom and liberty.
Cabal believed that culture is crucial for liberation. To strengthen his argument, he explains how colonial powers try to suppress the culture of their colonies. He also explains how colonialists create a small section of alienated group within a society by giving them privileges. That group starts feeling culturally superior to the rest of the society. Hence, during the liberation movement, reconversion of that group is important. Cabal also go over the idea of “convergence of cultures” for the liberation movement. This amply explains that he believes that liberation struggles revolve around culture and that is why, strengthening of culture through unification is required in order to oppose colonialism.
Sukarno doesn't consider culture as important. That is why Sukarno mentions a couple of times during the Bandung conference that people attending the conference come from diverse religious and racial backgrounds but that diversity doesn’t matter. He explains the reason for diversity by pointing out that Asia was the birthplace of many religions so it's normal to have that much diversity in people attending the conference. He raised the motto of “unity in diversity” at the conference. He also focused on the common desires of attendees: life and liberty. Moreover, he reminds participants that they have common roots, face common economic challenges and common experience with colonial masters.
